Prevention starts at home
New research shows your home may be germier than you think. The study and survey come from the Hygiene Council (funded by Reckitt Benckiser, the makers of LYSOL® Brand products). Researchers visited 35 U.S. homes, swabbing for bacteria in 32 locations in each home. Out of the 32 places in the home, the top spots for bacteria are the toilet bowl, kitchen drain, kitchen sponge or counter-wiping cloth, bathtub, and kitchen sink.
What are germs? There's a lot more to germs than meets the eye - literally. Learn what you need to know to help keep your family safe. Some germs can survive for days on household surfaces like kitchen counter tops, sinks, and phone receivers. Use LYSOL® Disinfectant Spray to kill germs and bacteria and get rid of nasty viruses that can cause the spread of colds and the flu.

Create a weekly schedule or cleaning wheel that rotates every month to show which family member's turn it is to help with a certain task, like sweeping or folding laundry. And make a rule that the kids must clean their rooms at a certain time every day—right after school or before bed are two good times to choose. Here are some areas to focus on:
- All Around the House: Floors and furniture generally present a low risk of germ transmission. However, vacuuming carpets and soft furnishings does pick up dust, dust mites, and other debris. Cleaning hard surface floorings with an appropriate detergent and water also removes dust, dirt and visible mold growth. LEARN MORE >>
- Bathroom Cleanup: The risk of germs spreading from the toilet bowl is usually low, provided we avoid touching it or splashing during use or flushing. The greatest risk of illness in the bathroom comes from surfaces that are frequently touched by the hands-toilet flush handle, toilet seat, faucets and door handles. LEARN MORE >>
- Kitchen Cleanup: You should also make sure that all your food preparation surfaces are hygienically clean before use and decontaminate them after contact with raw food. You can decontaminate small items such as crockery, pans and chopping boards by scrubbing them in hot water and detergent and then rinsing them thoroughly under clean water. LEARN MORE >>
- Food Safety: Because you cannot see, taste or smell germs, correct food storage and preparation procedures are necessary to keep food safe. More cases of food poisoning result from poor food preparation and handling in the home than in any other place. LEARN MORE >>
- Homes with Pets: Just like humans, pets carry germs in and on their bodies. Unlike us, however, pets pay little regard to where they deposit their germs. So having a pet at home does pose additional infection risks. LEARN MORE >>
